Lets go Turkey Hunting #1

"2009 Opening Day Youth Turkey Hunt"

On Saturday April 11th it was the opening day Youth Turkey Hunt in Idaho, I took Shayne (my boy) and Chett (Kalee's) boy. We had a fun time trying to call in those wild turkeys, with no success, yet any way. We spent 2 days trying to get them to come to us, we had Turkeys gobbling all around but could not get close enough for a shot.

Here Chett is glassing the area for those Wild birds, in the back ground is our hen decoy, the wind was blowing slightly so it made the decoy move and look alive.

Check out that scary animal in this picture, he looks like a alien from outer space, or somewhere beyond. At least the Turkeys couldn't see the white of his eyes and the glow of his white face.

In these 2 pictures I sent Shayne and Chett up over the ridge in front of us to see if there was anything on the other side. While they were gone I was glassing around and noticed a police car and then a Idaho Fish and Game officer down by my truck, as I watched I noticed the game warden started to walk up from the road to where we were, so I called the boys to come back since they were supposed to be within talking distance and not shouting distance of me. The game warden checked all of our tags and had Shayne sign his license. Then he wished us good luck. When we went to lunch I received a call from Kalee telling me that her friend had just called her and said that she had just heard my name on the police scanner running my license plate. She informed me that everyone in that area has a police scanner and would know about it. She was right because I went into Stokes after and was at the checkout when Kalee's mother in-law asked me if I got a ticket this morning, she too had heard my name. Oh well I guess it doesn't pay to be a non-resident hunter in Idaho or any other state ....LOL

This picture is on the second day in the after noon, we saw a nice Tom and a hen 2 ridges over to the west of us heading our way so we were hurrying to get to the top of this draw, unfortunately they were moving rather fast and beat us to our destination by about 20 seconds from being within range. There was no stopping them with a call.

Here we have a little frustration and disappointment after our adrenaline was pumped and they were ready for Turkey dinner. It is fun and challenging to say the least. I kept telling them that it is a combination of skill and luck, and with our case seeing none of us have ever hunted Turkeys before there wasn't much skill, and the luck didn't happen to be with us on this day. Oh well we had a great time together and in my book that was the most important thing.

As we where sitting there in frustration it rained a fine mist and then the rainbows appeared. The end of this one was right down close to where we had parked the truck. So either the gold was down there already in the bed of my truck or on was on the other end (see pic below)

I told them to walk over the hill and see if the end was over there but all I got was 2 looks from 2 boys that pretty much told me to go to H#&&, ( if you want the end of the rainbow you go look for yourself). HAHAHA.....

All in all we had a great outing....and ate Dutch oven chicken and potatoes at Kalee's, for Easter Dinner.

One good thing about not getting anything on this hunting trip. That means we are going to have to go out again... YESSSS!!!
